چکیده

INTRODUCTION Candida genus yeasts are considered superinfecting microorganisms and can lead to severe periodontal infections in immunocompromised patients or individuals under antimicrobial therapy for long periods. Under specific situations, such as in immunodepressed patients, the superinfection by Candida can be refractory to conventional periodontal treatments. In these cases, the systemic therapy with antifungal drugs could be indicated. Oral candidosis used to be treated with polyene amphotericin B or nystatin. The discovery of antifungal activity of azolic compounds represented an important advance in the treatment of superficial and systemic fungal infections. Imidazolic compounds, such as ketoconazole and Braz Oral Res 2004;18(1):80-4

In vitro minocycline activity on superinfecting microorganisms isolated from chronic periodontitis patients Atividade in vitro de minociclina sobre microrganismos superinfectantes isolados de pacientes com periodontite crônica

Chronic periodontitis is the most common type of periodontitis and it is associated with various species of microorganisms. Enteric rods, Pseudomonas, Staphyloccocus and Candida have been retrieved from periodontal pockets of patients with chronic periodontitis and correlated to cases of superinfection. Local or systemic antibiotic therapy is indicated to reinforce the effects of the convention...

Prevalence and in vitro antifungal susceptibility of Candida spp isolated from clinical specimens in São Paulo, Brazil.

We examined the prevalence and the in vitro susceptibility to antifungal drugs of Candida spp isolated from clinical specimens at our university hospital in São Paulo, Brazil. Among 6,417 samples studied, positive cultures, were obtained from 222 (3.5%) most of them (68%) from the pediatric unit and nursery. Candida albicans and Candida parapsilosis were the most frequent species and the suscep...

Epidemiology and antifungal susceptibility of Candida species in a tertiary care hospital, Kolkata, India

Background and Purpose: The incidence of fungal infection as well as candidemia has increased significantly, contributing to morbidity and mortality in the developed countries. The alarming increase in infections with multidrug resistant bacteria is due to overuse of a broad spectrum antimicrobials, which leads to over growth of Candida spp.; thus, enhancing its opportunity to cause the disease...

Susceptibility to Fluconazole and Ketoconazole of Candida spp. Isolated from Primary and Episodic Vulvovaginites by E-Test (São Paulo, SP, Brazil)

Purpose: To evaluate the profile of in vitro susceptibility of yeasts isolated from cases of primary and espisodic vulvovaginitis to two antifungal agents. Methods: 40 Candida isolates from episodes of vulvovaginal candidiasis were identified by classic methodologies. The susceptibility testing of the in vitro fluconazole and ketoconazole activity against the isolates was accessed by E-test. Re...
